JOB TITLE:               Principal Organist


REPORTS TO:         Director of Music and Worship Arts



  •       Bachelor’s or advanced degree in organ/church music or equivalent work experience
  •       Advanced organ and piano skills; comfortable with all styles of music

The organ is a 3-manual 48-rank Casavant installed by Lauck Organ Company in 1999

  •        Proficient working in a team staff environment
  •        Good communication and organizational skills
  •        Music assessment, development and programming


The Principal Organist is a key member of the Music and Worship team at CUMC.  He/she must support the overall mission of the church, be a spiritual leader, and a supportive team member.  He/she should be called by God into this ministry and model the CUMC mission statement, “to vitally connect people to people and people to God.”



With direction from the Director of Music & Worship Arts

  •        Provide keyboard music for all worship services, special services, and other church activities as needed
  •        In collaboration with the Director of Music & Worship Arts:
  1.    Select voluntaries for all worship services
  2.    Attend Worship Planning meetings as directed
  •        Accompany all choral rehearsals for adult, youth and children’s choirs
  •        Be available to lead sectionals as needed
  •        Work with soloists, instrumentalist, and other musicians as needed
  •        Assist with choir communication
  •        Coordinate music for weddings and funerals in consultation with the families
  •        Supervise maintenance of church instruments, including pipe organ and pianos



  • This position is a part time position (approximately 25 hours per week)
  1.    Sunday worship (8am-1pm)
  2.    Wednesday afternoon – Music Team planning, children & youth rehearsals
  3.    Thursday – Adult Choir rehearsal (6-9pm)
  4.    Friday & Saturday – Scheduled weddings
  5.    Other hours as needed to complete job responsibilities
  6.    Summer hours to be coordinated with the Director of Music & Worship Arts
  • Abide by CUMC and United Methodist Church Discipline policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Attend continuing education programs as budget allows
  • Maintain membership in professional organizations
  • Maintain keyboard skills via practice sessions
  • Other tasks as directed by Director of Music and Worship Arts
  • Principal Organist may use the church facility for private lessons without cost, subject to availability and coordinated with Director of Music and Worship Arts
